Triple win for local homes at Surrey Care Awards

Three proved to be the magic number for local CareUK teams recognised at the Surrey Care Awards.

The Care UK homes, Appleby House in Epsom,Kingsleigh in Woking and Broadwater Lodge in Godalming are all celebratingafter each winning an award at the prestigious event.

The Surrey Care Awards reward excellence andinnovation in the care home sector across the county. The three Care UK homeswere nominated for Most Innovative Activity Programme, Excellence in DeliveringDementia Care, and Registered Manager of the Year.

Kingsleigh care home, on Kingfield Road, came firstfor Most Innovative Activity Programme. Thanks to the team’s focus onmeaningful lifestyles, the home embarked on some major changes to reflect theresidents’ interests and hobbies – including the creation of a pub, TheSquashed Inn, and a coffee shop, where the colour scheme and name were chosenby residents.

Shona Bradbury, home manager at Appleby House, wasannounced as Registered Manager of the Year due to her boundless energy,creativity and good humour.

Described as a ‘shining light for the highestquality and most innovative dementia care’ – Shona has forged strongrelationships with local charities and organisations, including the NationalActivity Providers Association, The Purple Angel dementia awareness campaignand Creative Minds. These relationships all enhance her knowledge and that ofher team, as well as ensuring the very highest quality activities forresidents.

Broadwater Lodge in Godalming scooped the award forExcellence in Delivering Dementia Care.

Home manager Angela Bookham has a clear vision ofthe care setting she wants to create – and leads by example to make thishappen. The team at the care home understand that great dementia care is allabout seeing the person behind the dementia, and Angela ensures the focus is onwhat residents can do, rather than what they cannot. After creating a vintagepub, kitchen and aviary, Angela’s team took resident’s interests even furtherlast month by creating a small farm at the home, complete with pigs, goats andchickens.
